This is a question that haunts me on a regular basis. It is a little like going onto a car forecourt and asking how much a car is…
The cost of a website redesign is dependent on 2 things:
Just like a car, the more you want from your website and the more you value your website the more you are likely to spend. Therefore, it is very difficult to accurately define an average website redesign cost that is useful and meaningful!
If you use a one-man-band who has recently graduated from university and operates from his bedroom, you will be looking at a significantly lower investment than if you use an experienced, specialist agency. The results you get will be vastly different too.
There is a general perception that website redesign has now become more ‘expensive’ and there are a number of reasons this might be:
So there really is no price list for websites, which I understand doesn’t answer your question or the title of this blog so I shall continue…
Asking yourself these 2 pivotal questions will allow you to understand what kind of investment you will need to redesign your website.
This question can heavily influence how much you spend on a website. Of course, if you want your website to be a core element of your business, to provide ROI and a stream of leads you are going to need to spend more than a business who ‘just wants a brochure website’. But is there any point in having a brochure website? What will it do for your business?
Likewise, most agencies will offer you 2 different options for website design: Template and Bespoke. If you want a website that is built around your business’ needs, sales cycle, personas and brand a bespoke site is the way forward for you. Of course, like anything made to measure, it will cost you more and will likely involve a lot more of your time so your business knowledge can be turned into a vision for the website. After all, no one knows your business as well as you do!
How much you value your website will also impact on how much you spend on redesigning it. If it is already a great lead generation tool and is already providing significant ROI then it absolutely warrants more investment. If your sales people perform well, they get a bonus right?
If you (and your business) value your website then investing enough to improve this further is crucial, otherwise what’s the point?
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in your website if it isn’t performing well or if you feel your business doesn’t value it. Websites provide a wealth of opportunity to attract prospects, service existing clients or even act as a sales tool so if yours isn’t doing anything for you, the likelihood is it needs a little TLC. Carrying out some research into why it isn’t working for you, what you want from the website and what your users want from it will really help you understand just how much work needs doing and therefore how much investment is required.
There are a number of other things that you should consider that may also increase the required investment for your website redesign but aren’t necessarily included in the design itself.
Things like Photography, Persona Development, Brand Development and Copywriting all directly impact on the quality of your website but aren’t usually something included in the price of a website redesign.
Any good agency will have these resources to hand for you to call upon, but this doesn’t mean they are going to be free. But just because they aren’t free doesn’t mean they aren’t important! Having a beautifully designed website will do nothing if the user journeys are irrelevant to your personas, and it certainly won’t reflect well if you have poor quality images and typos!

Again, depending on what you already have and how much you value your website it will impact how much you spend. You can be looking at spending anything from £250 - £10,000 for additional assets for your website.
The purpose of this blog was never to give you a definitive figure on how much a website ‘should’ cost because that would be impossible. You can have a website built for £250 if you wanted to but would it be the same quality as a website built by a professional agency? Sure, you might be looking at an investment of anything between £5000 - £30,000 but if you value your website and want it to be a core part of your business then the investment should reflect how much you value your website. Most businesses wouldn’t think twice about investing £20,000 in a sales person, so why wouldn’t you do the same for your website? I can almost guarantee it reaches more prospects.
So, how much do you value your website?
